The gallery below is of features that appear to be images conveying some message, what in view of the stone material used we would call sculptures. The feature of the first three thumbnails conveys this the most clearly, looking like the head of a man. The enlargements are accompanied by descriptions and a preliminary analysis. Pictures 12 & 13 are from the site Ancient walls by Richard Nesbit
Analysis
Seen by themselves, one could have doubts about the artificiality of each of
these features. Taken all these pictures together, there is little doubt that making use of
features of the terrain was one of the methods to portray messages of one kind
or another, probably religious or cultural. What we now see, or at least can conceivably see, are faces and the like.
A lot of what is visible depends on the line of sight and the lighting, and to
get a better impression,
and for a definite judgement, one would like to have more and higher resolution
samples. Addendum 1 Since this gallery was made, more images have been found, and since the way this went is important to further analysis, this new data is presented separately. The new gallery is from the site of Marcahuasi, of which the first three thumbnails above (unknowingly when incuded) also originate. The Marcahuasi pictures reveal, besides their specific images, the method that has been used to get these results.
With the knowledge from Marcahuasi in hand, the web has been searched for similar images in Machu Picchu; the results have been gathered in a separate gallery.
Since this data was collected, a website has been found that makes similar explicit attribution of images, originating from research on the Yonaguni underwater finds, see here.
